While the start of their first school year is hectic for all new educators, stepping into the role of a preschool teacher often comes with an additional layer of preparation, as these young, curious students may be experiencing a school environment for the first time. That can make the first few weeks extra-challenging. But there are a number of ways that new pre-K teachers can prepare themselves for that tumultuous time. From maintaining a playful mindset to choosing comfortable clothes, from organizing your space with intention to planning effective transitions, from taking time to observe students to not being shy about asking questions, these tips for new preschool teachers can help them kick off their first year well—and make a more positive impact on their little learners from the start of day one.

For more resources on setting up a pre-K classroom for a new year, check out former preschool teacher Andrea Callahan’s Edutopia article “Getting Started as a New Preschool Teacher.” To get more ideas on making the transition to school easier for first-time learners, read educational consultant Cecilia Cabrera Martirena’s Edutopia article “Tips for a Less Stressful Start to Preschool.” And for additional information about establishing routines, look up educator Connie Morris’s piece, “Effective Transitions for Preschool Students.” Abby Bucher’s article, “Designing Your Pre-K Classroom for Deeper Learning,” also offers great tips specifically on learning environments for the youngest learners.

There are helpful tips for new early childhood education teachers to be found in this article from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), “Advice for a New Preschool Teacher.”

As a middle school teacher, I didn’t expect to find a lot to relate to in this video, but GOODNESS! So many similar suggestions that I would give a new middle school teacher: routines, transitions, comfortable clothing, organized space… But STAY PLAYFUL is my favorite and too often forgotten in secondary classrooms. Students of all ages want to have fun, and they enjoy seeing a teacher truly enjoying their work. Be delighted by your students! 🥰
